The main event of the go-home SmackDown of Money in the Bank featured a Tag Team Championship match. The champions, A-Town Down Under, defended their belts against #DIY. After an enthralling back-and-forth encounter, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa emerged victorious. The former NXT stars finally claimed championship gold on the main roster. As such, Triple H reacted to the popular tag team’s moment on SmackDown.
The Game took to X to congratulate Gargano and Ciampa for their win. Furthermore, Hunter reflected on #DIY’s journey by recalling their NXT tag title win in the same arena almost eight years ago. Since their debut on the black and gold brand, Triple H has been a huge advocate for the tag team. Speaking of the main event, the match was built around the relationship between Grayson Waller and Austin Theory.
For weeks, Johnny Gargano tried to convince his former friend that the Aussie wrestler was using him. The rivalry culminated last night as the two teams battled it out for the championships. More importantly, WWE seemingly planted the seeds for Waller and Theory’s breakup. During the match, the former champions had a couple of instances of miscommunication, which ended up costing them in the end.
As for the new champs, their win will likely bolster the tag team division on SmackDown. In addition to that, rumors suggest that they’ll defend their newly won titles at the SummerSlam PLE in front of Gargano’s home crowd. Nevertheless, only time will tell how the duo’s championship run plays out.
What is next for #DIY after their win on SmackDown?
#DIY’s crowning moment had been a long time coming on SmackDown. Despite being fan favorites since their arrival on the main roster, WWE waited for a while to pull the trigger on them. After finally becoming Tag Team Champions last night, fans are already anticipating the popular tag team’s next move.
As mentioned above, Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano are seemingly earmarked for a title defense at the Biggest Party of the Summer. If that’s the case, their challengers will be decided in the coming weeks.
The Street Profits are strong contenders to square off against the new champions at SummerSlam. On last night’s SmackDown, the duo defeated Pretty Deadly. Meanwhile, A-Town Down Under could demand a reshot for their titles, which may end up happening on August 3 in Cleveland.
