Tristan Wirfs becomes the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history after signing massive $140.63 million contract with Bucs

The contract negotiation between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tristan Wirfs finally came to an end, and all prior records have been broken. The star offensive became the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL at his position.
Sources close to Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Wirfs has signed a mammoth five-year deal worth $140.63 million, including a guaranteed money of $88.24 million and a base salary of $28.1 million annually. This deal will take place following the 2024 season and ties him through 2029.
Given, that the three-time Pro Bowler is still in his rookie contract, which covers the coming 2024 season which pays him $18 million per year. Interestingly, up until now, the highest paid was the Detroit Lions’ Penei Sewell with an annual salary of $28 million– whom Wirfs surpassed barely.
Since the offensive lineman was seeking a contract extension, he decided to hold out from the voluntary team activities as he didn’t want to risk any injury. Later on, he was also kept out of the padded periods of practice.
Last year, the Bucs picked the fifth-year option on Wirfs’ rookie deal for the 2024 campaign which would pay him $18.2 million fully guaranteed. However, as the team wanted the star player for the long term, they finally offered him the record-breaking deal he deserved.
Buccaneers GM Jason Licht prioritizes Tristan Wirfs’ extension
As the contract talk has been in place since May, the Tampa Bay General Manager Jason Licht previously addressed this matter and shared that the negotiations are being done for a long-term contract. Having said that, he again addressed the matter last month on July 27, he said Wirfs deserves to be the highest-paid tackle.
The guy deserves to be highest paid [safety]. So we’re working very diligently to see how we can do that, you know, so it can help both sides, as well. So it doesn’t hurt our future so we can still continue to win, but we can reward him.Jason Licht told the reporters
The three-time Pro Bowler started his NFL career as a right tackle, leading his team to the Super Bowl trophy in his rookie year. Swiftly as he began establishing his prominence in the field of law, he First-Team All-Pro selection in his second year, followed by a Second-Team selection in his third year.
