The New York Giants’ cafeteria staff were felt speechless when they received their Christmas bonuses this year. Giants HC Joe Judge hand-delivered the bonuses personally to executive chef Angelo Basilone. The Giants’ coaches and players raised money as a way of saying ‘thank-you’ to their support staff.
Joe Judge thankful for the support staff’s hard work
Judge walked into the kitchen to meet with chef Angelo Basilone, 47, and give him the good news. “He shook my hand, thanked me, told me to thank my staff, and asked me to distribute it to everybody. He was grateful for all the hard work that we put in”, said Basilone.
The players and coaching staff along with Judge raised $300,000 for the 70 members of the Giants’ support staff.
The staff left in tears by the team’s generosity
The employees got emotional after seeing their Christmas bonuses. This year’s average bonus comes out to $4,285 per employee. Basilone said that the bonuses will help a lot of people. Many members of the staff ever affected due to the pandemic. Others faced different issues.
But this year’s bonus will help them get back on their feet. “It really does mean a lot”, added Basilone. “We watch every snap. We are humbled to be part of the team, lucky to be part of the organization. And to know they consider us part of the family is great.”
Not the first time Judge raised over $100,000 for the Christmas bonus
Before Judges’ appointment as the Giants Head Coach, the highest Christmas bonus was $80,000 given to 30 employees in 2019. This changed once Judge took over as the Giants’ head coach. Last year, Judge’s team raised a grand total of $200,000 as a Christmas bonus for 70 employees.
“You don’t know how much a little bit of money does for somebody and what situation they’re in,” Giants’ Safety Logan Ryan said. “You never know what someone’s going through.”
This act by the Giants’ coaching staff and players speaks volumes. Wins and losses don’t define a person’s character but good deeds like this definitely do. The Giants have set up a great example by helping the staff during these tough times. The Giants are going to face the Philadelphia Eagles at the Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
