The 2025 NFL season was going to be a test for Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins. On one hand, he had to stave off criticisms about his ability to stay on the field, and on the other hand, there were questions about his team’s desire to succeed.

His 2024 season was littered with concussions and the growing rumors that he might not be fit to play in the NFL. He returned, but the remainder of his season, he played well against mediocre teams, and then struggled against better rosters.

In the past offseason, there was some concern about the roster construct and whether they were capable of performing better than last season. Those concerns showed their ugly side when the Dolphins faced the Indianapolis Colts on the road.

Tagovailoa and his offense struggled for the 1st three quarters, which led to another epic meltdown from star receiver Tyreek Hill. They managed to score some points, but by then, the game was well and truly out of hand.

Ever since the game was over, analysts and fans have slammed the Dolphins. They asked if Tua Tagovailoa can be a good quarterback in the NFL. At the media session at the Dolphins’ facilities, reporters asked the QB about those opinions.

It’s hard for me as I don’t see any of what you guys are talking about, like I don’t have any social media… It doesn’t matter anyways. Are they going to help us win the game?

Tua Tagovailoa replied

The Hawaiian added that every member of the team is looking at each other and demanding that they fix their mistakes and play better. The 27-year-old is oblivious to the conversations surrounding him and his team.

Mike McDaniel wants Tua Tagovailoa to play better

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 114 yards and 1 touchdown. Along with those numbers, he also registered 2 interceptions and was sacked 3 times for a quarterback rating of 51.7.

His substitute, Zach Wilson, had a better outing against the Colts. Head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about his franchise QB’s struggles at their media session, and he said this:

I think I saw a quarterback play that was less than to be desired, which Tua absolutely knows. He’s the captain and the franchise quarterback, and everybody kind of fell victim to something similar.

Mike McDaniel said to reporters

The head coach then went on to justify his quarterbacks’ mistakes by suggesting that most NFL QBs struggle in their first game despite months of preparation.

The other games in the opening week did not help his analogy, so didn’t Daniel Jones, who was starting a game for the first time since walking out of the New York Giants’ facilities, and performed admirably.

However, the 42-year-old head coach emphasized that he and the team do not make the same mistake twice. Therefore, fans should expect a response in their next game against the New England Patriots.

Tua Tagovailoa and teammates had a players-only meeting

16 games took place over the past few days, and the worst margin of defeat was in this game. Losing by 25 points is hard for any team, but the manner in which the Miami Dolphins lost raised eyebrows.

While speaking with the media, veteran Omar Kelly remarked that Tua Tagovailoa revealed how the entire team met for a players-only meeting after their humiliating loss.

Such meetings generally take place after a spate of losses. Therefore, it is surprising they arranged it this early. It seems the players are intent on stopping this slide before it threatens to destroy their season.

If they can indeed turn it around, it would be a story. If the losing does not stop, Tagovailoa and his teammates will face many more tough questions going forward.
