Tua Tagovailoa heard several opinions about his future with the Miami Dolphins and football in general, including that he should consider retirement after his latest concussion. The 26-year-old isn’t ready to give up just yet because he loves football.
On Monday, Tagovailoa attended his first press conference since hitting his head in week 2. He had already announced his return to football, but the only question remaining was the timeline. On top of it, the even bigger question was the safety measures the Dolphins are planning for him when he starts as their quarterback.
There was much debate about Tagovailoa wearing a guardian cap over his helmet for an extra layer of protection. However, he has zero intentions of wearing one. When asked the reason for such a decision, Tua replied, “Personal choice.” (H/T: Cameron Wolfe)

He further added that doctors had already explained the long-term implications if he received a similar sort of blow in the future. Despite the dangers, he has decided to continue playing football without wearing a guardian cap.

Tua Tagovailoa ready to risk his life to play football
While the Dolphins struggled on the field without their starting quarterback, Tua slowly returned to practice and even participated in a few drills with Odell Beckham Jr. Mike McDaniel and his Dolphins coaching team are slowly trying to bring his fitness levels up so that he can be 100% when they reinstate him as their starter.
Then again, the risk of suffering another blow will always remain, but according to Tua, people are in constant threat of hurting themselves, but that’s not stopping anyone from going about their daily lives.

Tagovailoa suffered his third documented concussion while playing the Buffalo Bills in week 2. The Dolphins ruled him out for several weeks due to concussion protocol. In the meantime, McDaniel’s side sits with a 2-4 record after only picking up wins against those that have a worse record compared to themselves.
Tua had signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension during the offseason, making him one of the highest earners in football. A healthy Tagovailoa led the Dolphins to consecutive playoff appearances for the first time since the early 2000s.
