On a day when India registered their first medal in the 2024 Olympics, they also suffered a massive letdown in the form of Deepika Kumari, one of their most experienced Olympians. The Indian women’s team lost against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Summer Games in Paris.

As the youngest member of the three-member team, Bhajan Kaur showed promise for the future but then sadly enough Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat failed to live up to their heightened expectations. One hit even went down as low as in the ring of the fourth pointer which is deemed as mortifying for any archer who is a part of the Olympics.

The score read 52-51, 54-49 and 58-43 in favour of the Netherlands, a team that India defeated en route to their fourth-place finish at the Antalya World Cup last month. In just a month’s time, such a drastic change in the outcome of the game has left the Indian audience shocked.

This is Deepika Kumari’s fourth Olympic appearance and the farthest that she managed to go so far was in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics finishing in the quarter-final in the individual category. As a part of the women’s teams, her records didn’t improve by leaps and bounds either.

The most experienced member of the Indian team, Deepika Kumari could only garner 48 points while Bhakat shot two less to amass 46 points. It was Kaur who showed some impeccable temperament to fire a staggering 56 out of 60 points. However, the Dutch team of Quinty Roeffen, Gabriela Schloesser and Laura van der Winkel were too good on the day and didn’t miss out on the opportunities to edge past the Indian contingent.

In the opening set, there were two 7s shot by Kumari and Bhakat followed by a couple of 6s in the next round which allowed the Dutch trio to get themselves a 4-0 lead. Things exacerbated for the Indian unit as Bhakat struck a 4 in the next round and despite Kaur’s sensational precision, the Indian team kept on falling behind. By the time Kumari could finally get a 10, the match was already sealed by the Oranje brigade. The netizens were highly disappointed at what they saw, especially with an experienced Deepika Kumari in the center. Here are some of the reactions:

As the tweets poured in frustration, Kumari will be hopeful of redeeming herself when she takes the yard against Reena Parnat of Estonia on 31st July in the women’s singles event of archery.
