Tyreek Hill is assessing his options after the Miami Dolphins cut ties with Mike McDaniel earlier this week. One of those options is a return to the Kansas City Chiefs and a reunion with Patrick Mahomes.
The Dolphins missed the playoffs for the second year in a row after making consecutive appearances in the first two campaigns of McDaniel’s tenure. Hill and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa were pivotal to the team’s success.
Unfortunately, injuries and a poor string of results culminated in the Dolphins firing McDaniels. This move could set off a domino effect, potentially causing several players to leave the building. One name to watch is Hill because in a recent social media post, the All-Pro wide receiver hinted that he’s open to re-signing with the Chiefs.

“We’ll see what happens in the offseason…”
Hill was extremely close with his QB, Patrick Mahomes & they won an SB together.

Why did Tyreek Hill leave the Chiefs?
Hill, a fifth-round draft pick, spent six seasons in KC and won a ring in 2019. He developed a telepathic bond with Mahomes and Travis Kelce, creating chaos for opposing defenses. That said, Hill was seeking a more consistent stream of income. It wasn’t possible as long as he had to pay a staggering amount of tax to the state of Missouri.

So, he forced a trade to Miami, a tax-free state, ahead of the 2022 season. The Dolphins sent a 2022 first-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick, two fourth-round picks, and a 2023 sixth-round pick to KC.
His first two years with the Dolphins were extremely productive. Despite playing in a very different setup, Hill crossed 1700+ yards on both occasions and helped the Dolphins reach the playoffs after a long hiatus. Surpassing Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving yards record became his ultimate objective.
However, he had to delay his plans. Over the next two years, Tua missed nine total games because of a concussion, and Hill suffered a broken leg. Since then, Hill has been in rehab. He’s set to recover midway through the OTAs, though it’s still uncertain if that’ll happen in Miami or somewhere else.

What’s next for Tyreek Hill?
With McDaniels no longer in the building, it’s safe to assume that Hill might explore other avenues. KC hasn’t forgotten his prowess as a WR1. But there’s an issue. No one, not even Hill, can predict that he will be able to retain the same explosive pace that made him stand out from the pack.
I’m afraid to tell the nostalgic among Chiefs Kingdom…Tyreek Hill ain’t saving Kansas City.

The Chiefs aren’t in a great situation either. They regressed further after losing the 2024-25 Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs finished 6-11, missed the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era, and watched the two-time league MVP suffer a devastating ACL injury that required surgery.
Mahomes has begun his rehab, and the Chiefs expect him to start in Week 1 of the 2026 season. Last time he missed a chunk of time due to rehab, Mahomes came back to win a ring.
Remember the last time they said he would never be the same.

With Rashee Rice’s future in doubt, it makes sense for the Chiefs to consider bringing Hill back, especially since Andy Reid enjoys working with veteran players. Better yet, the Chiefs should also explore the option of hiring McDaniels as the offensive coordinator, as Matt Nagy is unlikely to return with several head coaching gigs having opened up across the league.
