2024 Most Improved Player in the NBA, Tyrese Maxey, has shown no signs of slowing down this season. In the absence of star players, Joel Embiid and Paul George, Maxey has carried the Philadelphia 76ers to a 9-6 record as they are currently placed sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

The 25-year-old has shown steady growth since being drafted as the 21st overall pick in 2021. In his fourth season, Maxey won the MIP award and earned his first All-Star selection in 2024. With Embiid and George slowly working their way back into fitness, Maxey has been one of the brightest offensive forces in the entire league.

Maxey has been a revelation. Every year, he adds a new element to his game, tightens something, fine-tunes something else. Prior to this season, Maxey averaged 26.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. But this season, the guard has taken a huge leap once again, as he currently averages 33.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game in the first 15 games.

He is single-handedly dragging the 76ers out of darkness at the moment. Maxey had 150 points over his first four games and is currently second in the league in scoring after hanging a career-high 54 points to beat the Bucks on Thursday night. At 25, he looks fully capable of being the best player on a great team.

Following his 54-point game, Maxey (33.4ppg) is averaging more than Wilt Chamberlain (32.4ppg) through 15 games in a single season in 76ers history, only behind Allen Iverson (33.6ppg).

From MIP to MVP candidate

It is highly unlikely that Maxey will be hitting his ceiling anytime soon. On a franchise where Embiid was expected to be the centerpiece for years to come, it is Maxey who has taken over the reigns this season as he keeps the 76ers in playoff contention till the star players are back.

The 76ers have won just three NBA Championships in their franchise history, but the organization has been lucky enough to be home to some talented stars. Maxey could be their next big star, and he may be launched to super stardom if he wins the MVP award this season.

History is on Maxey’s side as he has already scored more than five 40-point games in his career. Why is that important? Because Chamberlain, Iverson, and Embiid all have more than five 40-point games in a 76ers jersey, and they have all won the MVP award.

It seems destined that Maxey will one day win the MVP award, and the way he’s playing, it could happen by the end of the 2025-26 season.

Joel Embiid continues to have injury struggles

76ers center, Embiid is, once again, dealing with a health concern, only this time around, it’s his right knee. The former MVP cannot catch a break when it comes to health and injuries. His earliest injury being a stress fracture in the navicular bone of his right foot just days before the 2014 NBA draft.

Last season, Embiid underwent a surgical procedure on his left knee to repair a torn lateral meniscus. He was able to return for the playoffs. The 31-year-old entered the 2025-26 season on a minutes restriction as a way to manage flare-ups of the left knee.

Only time will tell if Embiid is going to be ready for the business end of the season along with George, who made his return only a few days ago. Till then, 76ers and its fans will have their hopes on Maxey to continue his hot start to the season.
