An emotional Tyson Bagent stood on the podium after signing the biggest contract of his infant NFL career on Wednesday. He could not hold back his tears.

Bagent thanked the Chicago Bears organization for putting their faith in him. He dedicated the moment to his father, his “right-hand man,” who did not come from an affluent background.

His father had to wait until he was in high school to enjoy the luxury of running water at their home. Bagent revealed the two-year, $10 million contract extension with the Bears will be a life changer for him and his family.

There are a lot of things that… people, I think, I can certainly help. It’s a gift I have been blessed with but… It’s just little things like that, I don’t really know anyone back home with money so, it feels good, and it’s certainly a weight of my shoulders and my family’s shoulders. It definitely means a lot.

Tyson Bagent’s football career

Bagent, a West Virginia native, did not receive any Division 1 offers after finishing high school. He decided to attend Shepherd University to play for their football team, the Rams.

In his first year, Bagent went 7-3 as the starter. His stats witnessed a significant improvement during his sophomore year. The Rams went 9-3, with Bagent averaging 362.4 yards per game to complete 32 touchdowns.

The league was suspended for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but it failed to slow Bagent’s progress. The following year, he threw 391 completions for 5000 yards and 53 touchdowns to finish second in the Harlon Hill Trophy.

Bagent decided to try his luck in the transfer portal. He visited Division One teams but eventually returned to Shepard for his final year of eligibility.

The Rams went 13-2 (back-to-back seasons). Bagent recorded 400 completions for 4580 yards (70% completion), 41 touchdowns, and just 8 picks, leading the Rams to the Division II playoffs, which they lost to the Colorado Mines Orediggers. Bagent became Shepherd’s all-time leader in pass completion (1400), passing yards (17,034), and passing touchdowns (159).

Despite impeccable college records, very few quarterbacks are drafted. Bagent’s name wasn’t called by any NFL team during the draft, but he impressed the Bears during the offseason rookie camp and earned a roster spot behind Justin Fields.

Bagent played four games in his debut campaign, throwing 94 completions for 859 yards (65.7% completion), 5 overall touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

The Bears traded Fields to the Steelers the following season to make room for Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. Bagent came off the bench on four occasions as the Bears finished with a 5-12 record.

Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent are one of the best quarterback duos in the NFL

Modern football has evolved to the point where NFL teams no longer just seek an elite franchise quarterback but also a capable backup. It’s reflected in their contracts.

Last year, the Bengals signed Jake Browning to a two-year $1.94 million deal. The Chiefs brought in former Colts and Raiders starter Gardner Minshew as backup to Patrick Mahomes, while the Ravens took former Cowboys number 2 Cooper Rush.

Bagent is now among the highest-paid backups in the league, with the Falcons’ Kirk Cousins leading the way.

Tyson epitomizes what we are building at the Chicago Bears. We are constructing a team that is driven by belief and built by hard work, and there is no better example of that than Tyson Bagent.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said (ht/Bears official transcript)

Bagent played in both of the Bears’ first two preseason games. He racked up 26 completions for 299 yards, 2 touchdowns, and one interception.

After facing the Chiefs in their final preparation game, the Bears will host the Minnesota Vikings in week one of the new season.
