“U Mumba will look to sell ownership” – Owner Ronnie Screwwala releases statement about Pro Kabaddi League
Ronnie Screwwala
The Pro Kabaddi League is India’s second most popular franchise sports competition, but it has recently found itself in a bit of a pickle. The media rights of the league were auctioned off recently. Star India had bought media rights for each season since the league’s inception for a sum of Rs. 170 crores. But recently, owners have objected to Star’s participation in the auction process this year.
This is due to the non-participation of any other company but Star. No single company bid for the auction apart from Star leading to questions as to how that happened. A lot of teams have voiced out their opinions against this monopolization of the media rights by star. The latest to voice his opinion is Ronnie Screwwala, the owner of U Mumba.
Ronni Screwwala lashes out at decision
Speaking on the recent developments, Ronnie Screwwala said, “U Mumba will now look for an option to sell its ownership in the Pro Kabaddi League. Nepotism turned the auction process into a folly. It is a shame. The consultants who conducted the auction process should be saluted when there was only one bidder for India’s second most popular league. But who will hold them accountable?”
Screwwala further said, “The complaints lodged by the bidders for the auction process have not been disclosed by Mashal Sports. The auction process was set up as if it was meant only for Star India. If I get sued for these comments I will be happy.”
Further developments in this regard are awaited from Star and owners of the teams.
