U.S Open champion, Naomi Osaka, leads a public poll which aims to determine ‘The Best and Brightest Sports Moment of the Year’
Naomi Osaka
The reigning U.S Open 2020 champion, Naomi Osaka, is the world’s highest-paid female athlete. Further, the 23-year-old has made a political statement that centers around the racism which African-American people have to deal with.
During her astounding run in Flushing Meadows, the Japanse wore a mask with a different person’s name written on it before each match. The names were of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castile and Tamir Rice.
These people lost their lives to the rampant brutality in America that still prevails. With this statement, Osaka aimed to raise awareness for the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.
The Effect of Osaka’s Plea for Equality
The Athletic recently began a poll on Twitter which aimed to narrow down the greatest moments of sport in 2020. In a bid to find the ‘best and brightest,’ they chose Osaka’s “loud statements on and off the court, whilst winning her second U.S Open at just 22.”
This was placed against the “behind-the-scenes content in NBA Life, Logo Lillard and Big Face Coffee,” which was the accumulation of the NBA Bubble. Osaka edged past her adversary by collecting 54.9% of the votes.
Moreover, Osaka was also the most tweeted about female athletes of 2020. She has been at the helm of positive and a much-needed change even in transgressive sports like tennis. The former World No.1 will contend for her fourth Major title at the Australian Open 2021.
