Chelsea vs Manchester City UEFA Champions League final set to be moved out of Istanbul, Wembley seems the likeliest destination

Chelsea vs Man City

The UEFA Champions League final to be played between Manchester City and Chelsea is all set to be moved away from Istanbul. Istanbul was the allotted venue for this year’s final but newly imposed travel restrictions to Istanbul will see it being taken away, provided both the teams who have qualified are English teams.

Sources have learnt that the new venue could be either Wembley in London or Porto in Portugal. The UEFA has given the British government until Tuesday to offer the travel waivers it requires to move the Champions League final to Wembley or the all-English game could be played in Portugal instead.

Wembley has already hosted games with a limited number of supporters permitted, including the Carabao Cup final, which was played in front of over 7,000 fans in April.

The 90,000-seater stadium is also set to host the FA Cup final on May 15, with up to 20,000 supporters being permitted as part of a pilot event.

Benfica’s Estadio da Luz hosted the 2019-20 final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain after the game was moved from Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Estadio Jose Alvalade, home of Sporting Lisbon, also hosted games in the eight-team final stage competition last season.

Wembley is the apparent front runner to host the event but Portugal also remains an option for UEFA to host the final.
