UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid vs Shakhtar Donetsk

In one of the biggest shocks of the tournament, Shakhtar defeated Real Madrid 3-2. The more surprising fact was that Shakhtar were missing 10 players through coronavirus but still pulled off the victory. However, Real Madrid did put up a fight after going 3-0 down on the break and scored two goals through Modric and Vinicius. But they couldn’t find another goal to equalize the match.
FIRST HALF

Shakhtar opened the scoring through Tete who hit a wonderful first time shot from a pass by Victor. Real Madrid gifted them another through a Varane own goal from a rebound. Moreover, Shakhtar didn’t sit back and got another goal through Soloman from a wonderful back heel assist by Tete. Real Madrid were shell shocked going 3-0 down at the break.
SECOND HALF
Zidane managed to rally his players on at half time and Real Madrid look determined to come back in the match. Benzema and Vinicius came on for Real Madrid as they pushed to win the match. Modric opened the scoring for Madrid from a stunning 25 yard strike to the top corner. They followed it by scoring another through Vinicius who slotted a finish to the bottom corner. However, they couldn’t find the crucial equalizer as they had a stoppage time winner ruled out for offside by VAR.
Post match Modric agreed Madrid weren’t up to the mark and said, “In the first half we were not worthy of this competition. It’s obvious we need to improve, we lacked confidence today, especially in the first half, but we have to move on, we can’t waste any time regretting what has happened.”
Zidane had rested Benzema and Vinicius to keep them fresh for the Barcelona match but it backfired here. Madrid need to sort out their issues immediately as they are in a two game losing streak and face Barcelona next.
