“Give own goal the Golden Boot!” – UEFA choosing NOT to award Golden Boot at Euros evokes wild reactions on social media

As UEFA Euro 2024 comes to a close, there is still no player with a clear lead in the race for the Golden Boot. From Harry Kane to Dani Olmo and Georges Mikautadze, there are a total of six players tied on three goals ahead of the final. Despite UEFA making use of assists and other metrics as tie-breakers in the past, the organization has opted to do something different in this edition of the competition.

The management have announced that they will award a joint Golden Boot title to all six players unless either Dani Olmo or Harry Kane manage to get on the scoresheet in the final. Being the only two players left in the competition, only a goal in the final will tip the award in either player’s direction.

Both Olmo and Kane grabbed crucial goals in their respective semi-finals. Kane scored The Three Lions’ opener while Olmo scored the winner for Spain against France. The possibility of a player not on the list also grabbing the award cannot be ruled out as well.

That being said, the decision has set off raging debates and discussions on social media. Fans believe that the Golden Boot should only be awarded to a single player.

Fans react to UEFA’s bizarre Golden Boot ‘decision’

For the first time at the Euros, UEFA may have to award the Golden Boot award to six different players! Cody Gakpo, Ivan Schranz and Jamal Musiala are also on three goals at the Euros. A fan commented that Cristiano Ronaldo winning the Golden Boot over Patrik Schick in 2021 despite being tied on goals was an absolute disgrace. The fact that UEFA were willing to change their metric this year enraged rival fans.

Another offered a simple solution to the conundrum, asking officials to hand the award to the player with the most goal contributions and not just goals. However, a few were confident that either Olmo or Kane will grab a goal in the final and claim the award for themselves. On the other hand, a confident fan claimed that Lamine Yamal will overtake all the above-mentioned stars with a hat-trick in the final!

Contrary to popular opinion, a supporter opined that none of the six players in this list deserved to win the award. He compared the situation to that of the Ballon d’Or, where neither Jude Bellingham or Vinicius Jr. were deserving of the award. Enraged Dutch fans claimed that the referee will eventually hand England a penalty in the final, giving Kane the chance to claim the award.
