UEFA to ban Super League players from World Cup and Euro, warns President Ceferin
Aleksander Ceferin warned players about their decision of playing in the Super league
The newly formed Super League is facing stiff competition from UEFA. Aleksander Ceferin has insisted that players taking part in the League will be banned from all UEFA and FIFA organised competitions.
12 clubs from Europe have decided to break away from their respective leagues and play in the newly former Super League. Clubs from England, Spain and Italy have decided to join the newly formed league as opposed to playing in the older format of UEFA competitions.
Aleksander Ceferin says UEFA cannot urge domestic leagues to kick out these 12 teams
Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA president also said that although a ban for the Euros taking place this summer is unlikely players would also face consequences in the long-run. The President has made his frustration evident while talking about the nascent league terming it a “disgraceful and self-serving proposal from clubs motivated by greed”.
“The players who will play in teams that might play in the closed league will be banned from playing in the World Cup and Euros, so they will not be able to represent their national teams at any matches,” he said.
“These cynical plans are completely against what football should be. This idea is a spit in the face of all football lovers and society as well. I’m not going to call them the Dirty Dozen, but …”
He added: “They write in their press release about solidarity, they don’t know ‘S’ about solidarity. They want to be famous. They will be famous in the wrong way.”
Ceferin also suggested it was not impossible that domestic leagues could kick out teams that have broken away. “This is the decision of domestic leagues but we are in contact with them and I’m sure they will do the same sanctions, as we will do within the law of course,” he said.
Ceferin also criticised the owners of the 12 clubs who are founding members of the Super League , but mostly directed his frustration at Ed Woodward of Manchester United and Andrea Agnelli of Juventus.
