UFC 254: Khabib makes it 29, wins over Gaethje via submission in round 2

GAETHJE TAPPED OUT. It finally happened. Khabib Nurmagomedov put his lightweight title on the line as he faced off Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254. The fight was easily the biggest and most talked about fights of the year. “The eagle” was undefeated with a record of 28 and 0 coming into the fight. Gaethje, coming off of the beatdown he handed Tony Ferguson put up one hell of a fight against the champ.
The fight was definitely a battle of contrasting styles, with Khabib claiming he would take Gaethje down “a 100 times if necessary”. Gaethje, being the more explosive fighter, had his work cut out for him nevertheless. It was a battle of Khabib’s takedowns vs Gaethje’s punches. In the end, however, it was Nurmagomedov who reigned supreme, making Gaethje submit to him in round two. Nurmagomedov now remains undefeated in UFC with record of 29-0.
Fight Analysis:
Round 1: Both men take their time, sizing each other up. Gaethje hit a weak leg kick, following up with strikes. Khabib did well to keep some distance between himself and Gaethje. Takedown attempt by Khabib thwarted by Gaethje, who responded with a big overhand. Knee strike by khabib followed by jabs. Big overhands as well. Gaethje responded with jabs of his own. Plenty of strikes by khabib. Big kick to the body by khabib. Takedown attempt by Khabib with 30 odd seconds left in the round. Khabib went for the arm bar with 3 seconds left. Round to Nurmagomedov with a 24-22 significant striking chances.
Round 2(final round): The round started off with Gaethje landing a big overhand. 31-22 striking by Gaethje. Khabib took down Gaethje, and its done and dusted. Gaethje tapped almost instantly to Khabib’s triangle choke.
