UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman is running faster towards being in the conversation of the Greatest of All Time (also known as G.O.A.T.) in MMA. The kind of dominance the “Nigerian Nightmare” is putting over the welterweight division is something reminiscent of the times of dominance that welterweight great George St. Pierre and middleweight G.O.A.T. Anderson Silva represented.
Since 2017, Kamaru Usman is the only champion in the UFC to have defended the title more than 4 times. Usman had his fifth title defence in his last fight when he defeated Colby Covington in their rematch adding another feather in the cap of one of the greatest sports rivalries. This fight too, just like the first one, kept the MMA fans around the world on their edge and delivered another fight of the year candidate out of their bad blood.
WATCH! UFC Champion Kamaru Usman talks about breaking his right hand 3 weeks before UFC 268 fight
In a talk on the FULL SEND PODCAST, Usman talked about how he broke his right hand before the UFC 268 fight against Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington. On being asked if he broke his hand before the Colby fight, Usman said “Yeah I broke it before the fight.”
He continued, “I broke it 3 weeks before, I didn’t throw it [in sparring] before the fight…I didn’t throw it until right backstage when we were warming up for the fight, I didn’t throw my hands for three weeks, my right hand.”
On telling how he broke his head, it was a rather expected answer, he says “I broke it throwing at someone’s head, Justin Gaethje’s head.” Both Gaethje and Usman are trained by coach Trevor Wittman and hence are sparring partners for each other. Just like Usman, even Gaethje had his last win at UFC 268 when he defeated Michael Chandler in a definite fight of the year candidate via unanimous decision.
What did you make of this incident happening to Kamaru Usman and Usman still showing up for the fight and winning it in a consensus? Who do you want to see the “Nigerian Nightmare” fight against next? Leon Edwards has been deemed as the undisputed rightful owner of the next title shot. Even Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington want a trilogy with Usman after they get back on the winning track. By next year, Sean Brady and Khamzat Chimaev will be in the title conversation as well with the kind of performance they are putting.
But Usman is rather interested in a crossover superfight between him and current boxing pound for pound great Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez is not interested at all but Usman has expressed his interest to test himself into the deep waters time again whenever the time is good. As of now, after conquering titles at 4 weight divisions, Canelo is looking for making his debut at cruiserweight next year and aim for a belt at the fifth weight division.
