“I think Poirier can get finished,” Justin Gaethje makes bold predictions ahead of UFC 269 main event

Justin Gaethje

Within just one fight, UFC Lightweight Justin Gaethje did enough work to have his seat secured for another title shot at the gold strap, but only after UFC 269. UFC 269 is headlined by a lightweight title match between the reigning champion Charles Oliveira and the challenger Dustin Poirier. Both the headliners are coming off spectacular victories, but Gaethje is also coming off winning a fight of the year candidate as well from UFC 268.

Therefore, Gaethje will be watching the fight closely to prepare for his next opponent and the second title shot. Gaethje’s last fight was an unanimous decision win against Michael Chandler, a fight which is now claimed by many as one of the greatest fights to ever happen in the history of the lightweight division. Interestingly, Gaethje won a fight against a top opponent after more than a year layoff. This made him the near undisputed next contender in line for the title shot.

In an interview with former WWE colour commentator Renee Paquette and former UFC Bantamweight Champion, Miesha Tate on their podcast Throwing Down, Justin Gaethje made his predictions on how the fight between Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira can go and where both the fighters have an advantage over each other as transcribed by Sportskeeda.

“If they get into some grappling situations, I think Poirier can get finished in the first two or two-and-a-half rounds,” says Gaethje. “But I think after that, most fights come down to heart and will. There is something special about Poirier when it comes down to that department you know. He has made all the money but it’s very special when you find someone who is not here just for the money and he is one of those guys. So I don’t see him losing in the heart and will department of this fight.”

Come December 11 of this year, we may see a new champion or the reigning champion making his first title defence, regardless the fight between Poirier and Oliveira is going to really test not only the endurance to go five rounds but the skillset to finish within any.

Who do you get it winning? Also, which match-up against Justin Gaethje is more exciting, the rematch with Poirier [the first fight being won by the latter] or a newly interesting fight against Charles Oliveira? Either one we can say will go as exciting as long as Gaethje is in it.
