UFC 274: Charles Oliveira has been stripped of his lightweight title as he misses the weight by half a pound
Charles Oliveira misses weight for UFC 274
The main event of UFC 274 was booked between the undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira, and the number one contender Justin Gaethje. Both these athletes are in their prime, and they were ready to put everything on the line in this lightweight contest.
Oliveira is on a 10 fight win streak, and he became the champ after defeating Michael Chandler at the main event of UFC 262. It was a tough fight for Oliveira, and Chandler had him in all sorts of trouble in the very first round, but just when everyone counter ‘Do Bronx’ out, he made an unbelievable comeback and knocked out Chandler to fulfill his dream of becoming the undisputed champ.
He then defended his belt against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 and cemented himself as a legitimate champion. Justin Gaethje fought his way to the title after beating Michael Chandler in an absolute war. He lost his last shot at the title after Khabib Nurmagomedov choked him unconscious in his retirement bout.
Gaethje was more dialed in than ever, and he didn’t want to leave any stone unturned to finally get the belt this time.
As per rules, Justin Gaethje can win the title now, but Charles Oliveira can’t
Both these guys had a wonderful training camp, and it was time for the official weigh-ins. Justin Gaethje stepped on the scales and he came in at 155 pounds. He successfully made the weight, but we can’t say the same for Oliveira. He came in 0.5 pounds heavier, and he was given an hour to make the final cut.
After his time was completed, Oliveira still came in 0.5 pounds heavier, and as a result, he was stripped from his lightweight belt. According to the rules, the lightweight title is vacant now, and Oliveira can’t become the champ, even if he beats Gaethje at UFC 274. Gaethje, however, is eligible to win the title, and he can finally get that undisputed belt wrapped around his waist.
It was rather an anti-climatic for Oliveira. He worked really hard to become the belt, and the championship status allowed him to help his family and those in need. Nonetheless, he is a true warrior, and you can expect him to bounce back from this setback sooner than expected.
