The 145-pound weight class has a new ace in town – Aljamain Sterling. The former bantamweight titleholder has an everlasting legacy at 135. Hence, he had quite the chip on his shoulder to prove himself against Calvin Kattar at UFC 300. Not only did he come out with flying colors, but he also showcased an epic new move.

Aljamain Sterling has lost out on his strap to Sean O’Malley. After much to-and-fro, he told MMA Junkie‘s Farah Hannoun that his move to featherweight was permanent. Moreover, he started preparing for the change in weight class accordingly. However, nobody expected “The Funk Master” to bring his own funk into the game and get inventive with a “Batista Bomb.”

Both fighters started equally strong, with Kattar having good switches and dodges. The fight did lack some momentum at first. From start to end, Sterling used his wrestling and outpointed Calvin Kattar with dominant control. Kattar could not mount any offense.

Kattar tried his best in Round 3 to stuff takedown and strike with Sterling. In a fleeting moment, Sterling edged him out to the periphery and quite literally back-powerbombed him. It was quite akin to Demetrious Johnson‘s inventive flying armbar originating from a suplex hold. Keen-eyed MMA enthusiasts have reacted to it as similar to Ex-WWE sensation Dave Bautista‘s signature powerbomb.

Aljamain Sterling completely out-grappled Calvin Kattar in the featured prelims of UFC 300 (Pay-per-view, ESPN/ESPN+). As a seasoned grappler, that wasn’t the surprising part. His move to 145 pounds for the extra 10 lbs part had a good apparent effect.

Sterling (24-4 MMA, 16-4 UFC) outpaced the rival all the way to a decision, with a 30-27 on the three judges’ scorecards. While he did not fulfill his plans of record striking, he had a dominant featherweight debut. Fans went on the internet to react to the powerbomb move from Sterling. Here’s how they have reacted –

Many fans have invoked WWE superstar Batista in the equation. Sterling’s move was uncannily similar to that of the wrestler-turned-actor. The signature style also remains one of the very few moves named after an athlete.

Featured commentator Stephen A. Smith even chimed in with his surprise at seeing the “Batista Bomb” in UFC. Contrary to the star of ESPN’s First Take a few others jibed that this was a “piledriver” and not a powerbomb since it landed the rival in front. All in all, the matter has gone immeasurably viral.
