The UFC 312 fight card featured several notable matchups, with champions Zhang Weili and Dricus Du Plessis headlining the co-main and main events, respectively. Both of their fights went the full five rounds, and concluded with an outpouring of praise for the fighters.
UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili fought American fighter Tatiana Suarez at UFC 312. In this bout, Weili showcased her skills, successfully overcoming a tough challenge from Suarez, who is known for her wrestling ability. After five rounds, Weili was declared the winner by unanimous decision. However, the fight was more of a decisive beatdown, with ‘Magnum’ clearly dominating Suarez throughout.
During the fight, the American fighter sustained several noticeable injuries, particularly one on her knee. Days later, Suarez showcased the current state of that injury on her social media. Initially, it was a significant gash on her right knee. The commentary team mentioned that this sizable opening on Suarez’s leg occurred when she was cut by the cage during a grappling exchange with Weili.

Despite her efforts and being the favorite, Suarez was unable to secure a victory. This ultimately resulted in suffering her first defeat in her distinguished UFC career. Meanwhile, her opponent, Weili, further solidified her position as the UFC strawweight champion. Notably, the Chinese fighter’s impressive performance has ignited discussions about who she should face next.
Demetrious Johnson names an interesting opponent for Zhang Weili’s next UFC outing
Since making her UFC debut in 2018, Zhang Weili has dominated nearly every fighter she faced. Throughout her career in the promotion, she has been defeated only twice, and both losses were to former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. Interestingly, there is another standout female UFC fighter, like Namajunas, who many believe could be a formidable challenge for Weili.
Valentina Shevchenko is a dominant active female fighter in the UFC who has continually proven her skill in the promotion. As a result, UFC legend Demetrious Johnson believes that a potential match between Weili and Shevchenko would be an exciting event for fans. Notably, Johnson has also suggested that both fighters could consider ending their illustrious careers after their clash.
What I want to see next for Zhang Weili, I would love to see her fight Valentina Shevchenko. I think both those ladies have cleared their divisions. I think those two fight one more time and they can both retire in the sunset. Let the younger division, let the younger athletes have the opportunity to win the belt.

Interestingly, UFC CEO Dana White was recently asked about the potential matchup between Weili and Shevchenko. In his response, White indicated that this fight still can happen. With that in mind, it will be intriguing to see how both fighters feel about this potential clash now that it has gained interest from many in the UFC community.
