Fight fans are in for great cards and exciting fights this international fight week. What could have been a card headlined by Jon Jones will instead be headlined by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. “The Great” is coming off a very dominant performance against Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Despite the performance at UFC 284, Makhachev won the fight via unanimous decision. He managed to give Volkanovski his first loss inside UFC breaking his 22-fight win streak.
Volkanovski, with only one prior loss, dominated the featherweight division, defeating Max Holloway three times, surviving a near submission by Brian Ortega, and consistently delivering exciting performances. Moving up to lightweight, he faced Islam Makhachev for the title, but despite controversy over the split decision loss, Volkanovski gracefully accepted the outcome and now looks forward to defending his featherweight championship once again.

Who defeated Alexander Volkanovski before Islam Makhachev?
Before his defeat at the hands of Islam Makhachev, Alexander Volkanovski had an impressive winning streak of 22 fights. He demonstrated his dominance by overcoming tough opponents in the featherweight division and came close to victory against the lightweight champion. Had it not been for Makhachev, Volkanovski would have maintained an undefeated record in the UFC. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that he had previously suffered one loss in his professional MMA career before facing Makhachev.
Alexander Volkanovski experienced his sole career loss early on in his fourth professional fight while competing in the welterweight division. At Australia FC 5 in May 2013, Volkanovski faced Corey Nelson, a fellow Australian fighter, and was defeated via TKO in the third round.
Despite facing a setback in his early career, Volkanovski made a remarkable comeback, embarking on an impressive 22-fight winning streak. With an unwavering determination, he diligently honed his skills to uphold his nickname, establishing himself as a dominant force in the UFC. He even attained the status of being the pound-for-pound number-one fighter before Jon Jones claimed the heavyweight title.
Alexander Volkanovski’s upcoming fight
After going to war for the lightweight championship, Alexander Volkanovski is back to defend his featherweight title. This time around, “The Great” will be going against the interim champion Yair Rodriguez, who is on a two-fight win streak since his loss to Max Holloway. El Pantera is among the craftiest fighters in UFC history and has always managed to deliver exceptional performances.
This will be the first time Volkanovski will go head-to-head with Rodriguez to unify the title. Alexander Volkanovski has made it clear that after he manages to defend his title once more, he will be gunning for the rematch with Islam Makhachev. Given the close fight in their previous bout, an idea of a rematch was also approved by Dana White. Regardless, he would have to get past El Pantera at UFC 290 before actually aiming for the rematch.
