“Not gonna take it serious”- Alexander Volkanovski says Henry Cejudo needs to prove himself in the featherweight division

Alexander Volkanovski vs Henry Cejudo

Alexander Volkanovski defeated the Korean Zombie at the main event of UFC 273. He dominated the fight from start to finish before Herb Dean stopped the contest in the fourth round. Alexander won the standing exchanges and looked like he was almost untouched by the Zombie. This was Alexander’s third successful title defense, and he’s looking to attain the title of G.O.A.T with his title run.

In an interview with MMA Hour asking about a possible showdown with Henry Cejudo, he replied “I will take him seriously once he is in the pool but he still needs to prove himself in that division(featherweight)”. He is not in favor of Henry Cejudo jumping the featherweight rankings and directly getting a title shot. He admitted he doesn’t have to think about Henry until he gets relevant in that division once again.

Cejudo last fought in May defeating Dominick Cruz for the Bantamweight title. He has been retired since. Cejudo is one of the very few double-division champions in UFC history. He is quite confident in his ability to defeat the current featherweight champion Volkanovski.

The Olympic gold medallist in an interview with Schmo said, “I believe I do have the speed, the wrestling, the IQ, the experience, the toughness, the grit to really challenge him like that.” In a post-fight press conference in January Dana White said this about Henry Cejudo getting a title shot, “This is f**king silly conversation. Isn’t that guy retired?”

Whether Cejudo jumps the line and gets a title shot remains to be seen. Many MMA fans do believe a scrap between Volkanovski and Cejudo will be a delight to watch but it’s all dependent on if Dana White wants it to happen.
