“To be champion for as long”- Alexander Volkanovski offers his respect to Jose Aldo for being a champ for over a decade

Alexander Volkanovski vs Jose Aldo

Alexander Volkanovski is the featherweight champion of the UFC. He’s one the most dominant featherweights we’ve seen in a while, and he holds wins over some of the most dangerous guys in the division. He is on a 10 fight win streak, and he holds wins over all the former champs.

His last fight against Brian Ortega was a fight of the year contender, and now that he is all set to defend his title against another legend, Chan Sung Jung, people are throwing his name in the G.O.A.T conversation. His career has been nothing but amazing, the only stain on his legacy is his fights against the former champion, Max Holloway.

Alex is 0-2 against Max, but both those fights were super close. He was hoping to bury the hatchet once in for all in a trilogy fight at UFC 273, but Max had to pull out because of an undisclosed injury. Many featherweight contenders threw their names in the mix, but Alex gave The Korean Zombie a chance to step inside the octagon against him.

Alex holds a win over Jose Aldo, and before his loss to Conor McGregor, Aldo was considered the best fighter on this planet. He was champ for over a decade, and Alex believes he still has some work to do to match his greatness. Talking to media at UFC 273 media scrum, he said, “I believe I’ve still got more work to do. I give Aldo the respect. To be champion for as long as he was…. is incredible. No matter the opposition that I’m facing with guys like himself and Max, I think I’m fighting absolute killers.”

“It’s pretty clear. But at the same time, to be champion that long, there’s going to be days you don’t show up, injuries, bad weight cuts – we’ve all done it. It’s a nightmare to not be on a day you’ve got to defend your belt. And for him to be for so long, it’s saying something,” Alex concluded.
