“Maybe I’m delusional, but we’ll find out”- Aljamain Sterling plans on putting a stamp on his rivalry against Petr Yan at UFC 273
Aljamain Sterling vs Petr Yan
The Oscars just ended but for the MMA fans, the show is just about to begin. Is someone going to get slapped into their place or is someone going to get kneed in their face when down? we’ll know for sure soon but for now, Aljamain Sterling remains confident and is also shredded two weeks prior to his fight.
Petr Yan is also confident enough that he can get a similar trajectory to this fight as the last one and also has shown signs of being really prepared for this rematch. Yan is motivated as much as Sterling and also is using the ‘No cornermen’ as a promotional tool according to Aljio.
Sterling and Yan fought for the first time at UFC 259. Although Sterling stayed active, Yan did a great job keeping Sterling’s pressure from controlling the fight. After keeping up an absurd pace, Sterling started to get gassed out and wasn’t as effective as in the first few rounds. Even with that factor added in, Sterling’s ground game is pretty solid.
In conversation with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, Aljamain said “At the end of the day, If he was better, I’d have said that. I’d have said that the guy was better and I have to close that gap but there’s a reason why I’m not saying that. Maybe I’m crazy. Maybe I’m really delusional, we’ll find out.”
“The ref saved me from myself” Aljamain Sterling says that he would have continued fighting Petr Yan if not for the ref
Although people have trolled Sterling for nearly a year and a half now, Aljamain said that he would have taken the five minutes and tried fighting in a compromised and gassed-out state. Even though it might just be a mere exaggeration, it’s just insane to even comprehend getting kneed in the face when you’re down by an MMA fighter.
It is also stupid of people to erase all of Sterling’s past victories and efforts by doing so. Cory Sandhagen thinks that Petr is going to win again but also warns him nonetheless of Sterling’s grappling. Although Petr would’ve won that day, Aljio did great in the first two rounds and was able to take him down successfully, even though he was not having a great night leading up to the fight.
“Thankfully, the referee and doctor saved me from myself because had they given me five minutes, I would have continued the fight… they stopped the fight, and thankfully they did… Honestly, being that compromised as I was going into the fight, getting punched in the head repeatedly and then getting illegally kneed in the head with a strike I didn’t see coming.”
“That fight isn’t getting any better for me. People can say whatever they want; I didn’t roll over; I didn’t quit. The referee saved me from myself, and I’m very, very appreciative of that.”
