UFC 318 PPV lineup just like other events has some solid stats associated with it. The 740th event so far, it’s the 24th this calendar year, and it’s the 8th pay-per-view installment of the season. However, for Dustin Poirier, this fight week at “Big Easy” is his last fight ever!
Dustin Poirier has said he won’t do a takeback on his fighting retirement, even if he won against BMF champ Max Holloway. ‘The Diamond’ has a kid boy on the way and plans to be there full-time after hanging it up, with some added lifestyle changes. So, it’s a final ‘war’ forever.
It has hit UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier much the same that Poirier’s retirement fight at Smoothie King Center is well in fact, his ‘last.’ The UFC Hall of Famer admitted it won’t be an easy gig to feel the atmosphere and call his fight at UFC 318!
I’m lucky enough to be there when it happens and be right next to the octagon or in the octagon when it happens. I’ve had to do some pretty emotional ones [before], …but I think this one will probably be the hardest — because I met Dustin way back after I beat Jeff Monson…ran into him at a gym in Lafayette, and to see what he’s become, it’s outstanding. Everybody has their time. I’m just happy Dustin understands when his number has been called…

‘DC’ has beefed with many over his illustrious career. When Cormier called it a day after his trilogy loss to Stipe Miocic, many critiqued that the US Olympic wrestler still had some in the tank. But the veteran always promoted the value of knowing when to call it quits. Hence, he’s happy Dustin Poirier could decide the same.
Moreover, it’s more than that for the emotional Cormier, who is known to express emotional vulnerability. Similar to Poirier, Cormier hails from Lafayette, Louisiana as well. He talked about his unique connection with Poirier, which began in 2011. Hence, for DC, it’s a full circle moment, from one veteran to another.
Entering what is to be his 14th UFC headlining spot, there is much pent-up emotion about Poirier’s retirement fight. It’s not just Cormier who has been pitching in with nostalgia on the topic of the fighter and his last ballot fight this weekend.
Matt Brown discusses the factors that contributed to lightweight Dustin Poirier’s status as UFC legend
13 title fights in PPV main events have happened this year, and the 13th happens to be a BMF fight between two legends of the game. Dustin Poirier yearned for a ‘legends’ only fight on his way out and got it for UFC 318.

With veteran stats of 30-9 MMA (1 NC), Poirier has been a long stay like some others. He has been a ranked contender on the UFC Athletes’ Listings for nearly the last decade and touted a fight in every one of his 14 pro years!
While Dustin Poirier never really snagged the undisputed gold, the former interim 155-pound champ excelled at heart and longevity. Veteran Matt Brown recently iterated just as much, saying he is one of the GOAT when it comes to warrior mentality.
Had he [Dustin Poirier] had just a little bit more athleticism, a little bit more good luck on his side, it’s a little bit of something, he would have been champion 100 percent…It’s not tearing him down, it’s just the objective truth. In terms of warriors and warrior mentality, I think he is absolutely one of the greatest of all-time in that. He’s probably got to be in the top five when you talk about guys willing to fight through anything…

There’s little doubt that Poirier is going to eventually be inducted to join the UFC Hall of Fame wing. This will be another achievement added to the already legendary career of the UFC 318 PPV challenger.
