“Be #1 then retire” Khamzat Chimaev affirms a huge promise made to his mother after achieving the final goal

UFC Welterweight Khamzat Chimaev is so far having an extremely good time, but he may not be here for a long time. Chimaev, who’s undefeated as a professional MMA fighter is going to face the biggest test of his career when he shares the Octagon with #2 ranked welterweight and former title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. Burns is coming off a huge victory securing a unanimous decision against fellow former title challenger Stephen Thompson.
Chimaev on the other hand is just 4-0 in the UFC but has made enough waves to get the fans’ eyes on his fight. Chimaev fought his first two UFC fights and won them both via finishes, in a span of just 10 days. In his third UFC fight, Chimaev knocked out Gerald Meerschaert within just 17 seconds of the very first round. In his fourth fight, Chimaev returned to the Octagon after a year and walked through a ranked and respected UFC welterweight in Li Jingliang.
Khamzat Chimaev’s mother thinks he becomes a new champion with every victory inside the Octagon
Chimaev has been getting a little more than usual media attention due to his bromance with UFC middleweight Darren Till ever since the latter flew down to Sweden to train with Chimaev at All-Stars Training Center. Together, Till and Chimaev are known as Smesh Brothers, and the team name is popular to such an extent that there lies a series available on Youtube by the same name.
“My mother thinks I become a champion after each fight I win,” Chimaev said on a recent episode of Smesh Brothers. “I did promise I will retire when I become a legitimate champion. So my goal is to be No. 1 and then I will retire.” [h/t MMA-Mania]
What do you make of Chimaev’s promise made to his mother? Do you really buy Chimaev will retire after becoming the world champion? A similar situation has taken place in front of the MMA Community back in October 2020 when now-retired mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov decided to hang gloves after the sad demise of his father who was also his head coach, the decision was rooted in a promise Nurmagomedov made to his mother.
