Jorge Masvidal- Colby Covington

UFC Megastar Jorge Masvidal won’t resolve even an inch of his bad blood against Colby Covington even after UFC 272, especially after the eye poke that took place in the first round of their fight last week. Masvidal and Covington faced each other inside the Octagon in a 5-round lopsided war in favour of Covington who took the unanimous decision win, thus as of now settling scores between two bitter rivals who used to be best friends training at the same gym.

However, unlike usual rivals, Masvidal and Covington were still hostile towards each other and ready to fight for more rounds even when the fight was over. What helped Covington dominate all the rounds of the fight was that his pressure through his back control and his pace was too much for Masvidal to bear and think around in order to adjust and come out with a counter solution. It was only at round four when Masvidal caught Covington with a looping right hook that wobbled the latter for a bit but the former didn’t capitalise much on the situation.

In a tweet, Masvidal posted a picture of a brutal scar on his upper eyelid that was caused due to an accidental eye poke caused by Covington in the first round of their fight at UFC 272. In the caption, Masvidal wrote: “Almost took eyes out but all good u cheating fuck see u soon”

Covington extended his open hand to Masvidal’s face to a level that one of Covington’s fingers got into Masvidal’s eyes. The eye poke was not clearly seen by the referee Herb Dean in the high pace of the fight and the fight couldn’t stop midway, but a stern warning was given to Covington at the beginning of the second round.

What do you make of the post-fight damage caused to Masvidal, do you think Covington should have been handed a point-deduction by the referee? Masvidal also said in his post-fight interview that when it comes to refereeing fights, Herb Dean is not his cup of tea. Do you think Dean’s best days of officiating highly staked MMA bouts are behind him? What do you think is next for Masvidal and Covington in their respective careers?
