Alexa Grasso vs Joanne Wood
Flyweight contender, Alexa Grasso scores her first victory with a quick and effortless rear naked choke hold over Joanne Wood in the co-main event of UFC Columbus. This is definitely a landmark victory for the Guadalajara fighter.
Currently on her third straight win after having moved up to the flyweight division, Grasso was ranked No.14 in the MMA Global Rankings at 125 right before her fight. Her opponent on the other was, that is Joanne Wood, was ranked No. 10 on the same index.
Round 1: Grasso who is known notoriously for her striking ability, tried to immediately take Wood down but her defense led to Grasso change her mode of attack. Wood’s expertise in Muay Thai helped her to Grasso at a bay, allowing her ample time to size up the situation.
However, when Wood advanced in anticipating for an opening, she was met with a spinning elbow thrown by Grasso that barely missed her head. This was enough to catch her opponent off guard. It led to a scuffle amongst the two with Grasso eventually taking control. Moments after, Grass was on her opponent’s backs looking for a window and eventually landed her first submission finish in her MMA Career. All this in the first round.

Alex Grasso has now won three fights in a row, the other two was against Maycee Barber and Ji Yeon Kim. This was her first time winning a fight via submission inspite of having fought 17 pro bouts. Joanne on the other hand has lost three times straight, making her future look bleak .
Grasso who recently moved up to the flyweight category, has quickly been able to distinguish her self from her fellow fighters and if she were to ever find herself in a position to recreate a similar finish, she could have a shot at the title. Though, Grasso isn’t certain about whom she would want to fight next but in her post fight conference, she tells Daniel Cormier she trusts the instincts of the UFC Brass, whom she believes will offer her ample opportunity to fight well known names in the UFC.
