On This Day in 2018: Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov squared off in one of the fiercest brawls of all time
Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov
Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov squared off in the main event of UFC 229, and it has been exactly three years since the fight went down. In what is considered to be one of the fiercest brawls of all time, ‘The Eagle’ swooped and battered ‘Mystic Mac’ to submission.
The buildup to the fight dated back to a nasty bus attack by Conor McGregor and his entourage, back in April 2018 at UFC 223 media day. Upon learning that Khabib Nurmagomedov had confronted his teammate and sparring partner Artem Lobov, McGrgeor and his crew lined up at the Barclays Center and attacked the bus carrying Khabib and others, notably – Michael Chiesa, Rose Namajunas, Ali Abdelaziz.
McGregor and his mates were let into the arena by the members of The MAC Life website, and began hurling everything possible at the bus. Chiesa was badly hurt, suffering a cut in his head. Namajunas, was shaken by the incident and had a lot of trouble recovering from the trauma. The UFC and president Dana White strongly condemned the incident.
Khabib Nurmagomedov submitted Conor McGregor in Round 4
Exactly, 6 months after the incident, on the 6th of October, the pair squared off inside the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. McGregor started off with his usual aggressive approach, and even went on to score more than Khabib in the third round – a rare round loss for ‘The Eagle.’ However, Khabib upped the ante in the fourth and executed a neck crank, causing McGregor to tap.
The onfield brawl was done. But the off-court one remained. Right after McGregor tapped, it took a while for referee Herb Dean to separate a raging Khabib. The Dagestani then pointed fingers towards McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach and troublemaker Dillon Danis, and jumped out of the cage and attacked him.
Meanwhile, Khabib’s teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Islam Makhachev jumped inside the Octagon and attacked McGregor. It took a ton of security guards and umpteen minutes for the brawl to cease. A nasty ending to one of the most hotly contested fights of all time.
