“I’m just a couple mistakes away from beating these guys,” Cory Sandhagen doubles down his claims to earn UFC title amidst recent losses
TJ Dillashaw and Cory Sandhagen
The year 2021 started with a bang for the surging Bantamweight title contender and number fourth-ranked UFC Bantamweight fighter, Cory Sandhagen when he knocked out the former UFC Lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar with a flying knee that too within just 28 seconds of the very first round.
Sandhagen made a strong claim for the title shot with this win and faced the former UFC two times Bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw in his next fight. Cory Sandhagen faced a split decision loss in this fight and even after this loss he got the opportunity to fight for interim the Bantamweight title against Petr Yan in October.
Yan was booked to face Aljamain Sterling but ‘Funkmaster’ pulled out his name from the fight due to medical issues and Cory Sandhagen accepted a short notice fight against Yan. Although, he faced a unanimous decision loss in this one as well. But still, even after facing two back-to-back losses and coming this close to the title, Cory Sandhagen is determined to wrap the Bantamweight strap around his waist in near future.
Talking about the same in his recent interview with MMA Fighting, Cory Sandhagen says, “Coming off the two losses kind of sucks, but I’m a little bit more of a deeper thinker than just, ‘Yeah, my last two were Ls, my first L this year was one of the most controversial decisions that the UFC has maybe ever had, and then the second one was a short-notice title fight against one of the best guys in the world.”
“So I’m not too beat up about it, man. I really think that I’m just a couple of mistakes away from beating these guys, and that just means that I just need to work that much harder. I still know I’m going to be champ.” {H/t MMA Fighting}
Cory Sandhagen predicts the result of Aljamain Sterling vs Petr Yan 2
The UFC Bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling will be fighting against the interim Bantamweight champion, Petr Yan in a title unification fight in the first quarter of this year. Cory Sandhagen is really looking forward to this fight but he doesn’t want to take the next step until this fight really happens.
Sterling already didn’t receive medical clearance once during UFC 268 and Cory Sandhagen believes whenever he is going to fight Yan, he is going to be the one to lose his title. Sandhagen added, “I think Yan’s got it,”
“That’s based on the first fight and that’s just based off of — Yan’s good, man. Yan’s good. Sterling’s good also, but I think Yan just protects himself so well and he’s super dangerous guy to fight, and that’s not an easy match.” {H/t MMA Fighting}
