Former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley has been dealing with adversity as he comes from a vicious knockout loss to Jake Paul in their rematch, with the latter probably pulling out the greatest fight finishing upset in the combat sports history. 2021 has shown that there’s nothing predictable in the fight game, rightfully after this event and UFC 269.

While Woodley seems to be in good spirits despite this loss and hasn’t lost any confidence in himself, it’s hard for some people to wrap their heads around what a YouTuber in Jake Paul, who has been invested in the sport of boxing for just 3 years, knocked out Woodley who in his prime, was the king of the UFC’s welterweight division for exactly 3 years, in fact, Paul wasn’t even around the sport of boxing when Woodley was the welterweight champion.

Amongst many shocked fighters around the world watching the Paul vs Woodley II event, MMA Legend Daniel Cormier was one of them. In his segment on ESPN titled the DC & RC Show, Cormier said, “Dude that was not good. That’s a bad look. And you know what’s worse? The after.” [h/t MMA Fighting]

Recently, Woodley tried to make things a little light-hearted by announcing a meme making contest themed around him getting knocked out by Jake Paul, and the winner would be rewarded a cash prize of $5,000. Later on, a content creator by the name of Chris Ashley was announced as the winner of this competition.

It is in reaction to this contest, Cormier continued on his segment “I don’t know what’s T-Wood doing on social media. He posts the knockout, he makes a contest about it. It’s like Jake Paul beating these dudes so bad that they start to make fun of themselves.”

“My biggest issue is these guys go in there to fight this dude, they lose to him,” Cormier said. “Ben Askren was immediately almost making fun of himself. It’s almost like you’re so embarrassed that you lost to the Disney kid or the YouTuber that you start to almost become self-deprecating [sic]. It’s bad. It’s bad what’s happening to these dudes, he concluded while talking to his co-host Ryan Clark.

What do you make of Cormier’s remark on Woodley’s meme-making contest? Is he just giving some brotherly tough love or is he going too hard on Woodley? Do Jake Paul fights make MMA fighters look bad or are there no elements of a fighter’s past legacy attached to a Youtuber who by now should be welcomed as a fighter? It’s still a hard pill for people to digest what they saw, but we must be acceptable of the fact that the fight game is an ever-evolving phenomenon.
