“Fighter may never be the same again”- Michael Bisping ridicules Renato Moicano’s corner for letting him fight at UFC 272
Renato Moicano at UFC 272
Renato Moicano stepped in on short notice against Rafael Dos Anjos when Rafael Fiziev pulled out from the co-main event of UFC 272. Moicano was coming off from a win over Alexander Hernandez, but taking on RDA at a short notice was too big of a task even for him.
RDA came in well prepared, and he immediately took the fight to Moicano. He took him to the ground and battered him nonstop for 5 rounds. Moicano’s face was a mess, and many asked for the fight to be stopped. The referee had to call in the doctor to check on him, and everyone in the commentary booth literally begged him to stop the fight.
The doctor had to give him a chance to fight, and he showed incredible willpower to at least finish the fight. This became the talk of the town after the event, and even RDA thought the fight should’ve been stopped. Michael Bisping was in the commentary booth for UFC 272, and he talked about this in his appearance at The MMA Hour. He advocated for MMA coaches to throw in the towel more often to protect their athletes, and he advised him to take a smart approach for their careers.
“The psychological damage is even more”- Michael Bisping is really concerned about Renato Moicano’s well being
Talking about such instances of a one-sided beating, he said, “Sometimes you’ve got to say, ‘You know what, today’s not our day. You’re gonna lose and I want you to continue to have a long, fruitful career.’ Because never mind the physical damage they’re going to endure in that fight… Moicano was a mess, let’s be honest… the psychological damage is even more. It’s one thing to get caught. If you get caught by a shot and you get knocked out, fighters have a great way of convincing ourselves, ‘Well we just got caught. We all get caught here and there.’”
“But to get systematically beaten down for five rounds to where commentators say this needs to be stopped, there’s psychological trauma there. That’s going to affect your confidence going forward, and there’s a potential that fighter may never be the same again. So right then and there, if they’re stopping that fight, they are saving the fighter’s career,” Bisping concluded.
