Khabib Nurmagomedov believes Conor McGregor’s fight with him was way more significant than the fight against Floyd Mayweather. The Dagestani fighter explains why in a recent interview.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in combat sports. He is crowned to be the greatest lightweight fighter of all time and has etched his names in the history books with amazing wins against top fighters. In the recent episode of the FULL SEND PODCAST, Khabib made an appearance to talk about his past with Conor McGregor and how significant he thinks that fight is in combat sports history.
Another fight that was also bought into the discussion was the historical first-ever cross-promotional event between the Irishman and legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather. This boxing match broke all kinds of records in 2017. To date, it is one of the biggest PPVs of all time. However, Khabib believes his fight with Conor is much bigger than the boxing match.

“This is for sure the biggest fight in the history of martial arts. Nothing close,” said Khabib talking to the NELK boys about his Conor fight. “Even when he [Conor] fought with Mayweather, it was like, okay. But not many people care about his fight. It was a historical event because MMA champion vs boxing champion. But many people don’t remember what happened inside the fight.”
“Like do you remember what round the referee stopped the fight? Most of the people don’t remember. It was like just a sparring fight. For me, it was not a real fight. Because this guy [Conor] is not a real boxer. For me, it was more like a fake fight. But what was between us, it was real.”
Khabib believes there was no real rivalry between Conor and Mayweather unlike in his case. Khabib and Conor have been rivals for a really long time. There was no real respect between both the fighters for the other and they went into the octagon with evil intentions. “Everything that happened before the fight, inside the fight, after the fight, it was real,” said Khabib on what makes his fight more significant in history.
