“Maybe title shot, maybe Colby fight”- Gilbert Burns suspects he might have to beat Colby Covington to get a title shot
Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington
The welterweight contest between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns is going to take place at UFC 273. Burns fought for the title against Kamaru Usman back in 2021. Burns started the fight really well but he was knocked out by the champ, and he’s been looking to get back to the top with a dominant win over Khamzat.
Chimaev is the hottest prospect in the UFC right now. He’s on a 4 fight win streak in the UFC right now, and his last performance against Li Jingliang was something to behold. Khamzat has been asking for top-level contenders ever since his arrival, and he’s finally getting a shot against someone in the top 5. Khamzat believes he’s ready to fight for the title, but Burns is putting in the work to stop Khamzat in his tracks.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Burns revealed that he has hired two Russian wrestlers to help him prepare, “I had to hire two wrestlers, two very tough Russians who are helping me daily,” Burns said. “They asked to keep their names a secret, and I had to. Because they are showing me a lot of stuff, changing a lot of stuff in my game. There’s a lot of technique with the hip, waist, control. They are ahead of the United States.
“Risk is very big, but the reward is very big”- Gilbert Burns on his fight against Khamzat Chimaev
Burns was a roll before he faced the champion, Kamaru Usman for the title. Even after having a great start, he got knocked out by the champ, and he’s been trying to climb his way to the top ever since. Burns is coming off a win over Stephen Thompson, and he believes a win over Khamzat would get him to the title.
Talking to Underground, he said, “I’m completely focused on the performance, but I do believe a finish, whoever wins I think will be very close to a title shot, but it’s very hard to control these things. You could go out there and get a finish, and Kamaru and Leon Edwards are supposed to be July, and for any reason that fight goes to August or September, I don’t see either me or Khamzat are not going to be waiting that long to fight for a freaking title, so Colby (Covington) is right there. Might be an option.”
“Maybe title shot, maybe Colby fight, whatever, you know, but that’s too much ahead. We went to focus until April 9… The way I see is the risk is very big, you know, but the reward is very big, as well,” Burns concluded.
