“He’s not my cup of tea” Jorge Masvidal criticizes Herb Dean for poor refereeing in Colby Covington fight at UFC 272
Jorge Masvidal trashes Herb Dean's officiating at UFC 272
Jorge Masvidal was clearly not happy about the refereeing from Herb Dean at UFC 272 in his fight against Colby Covington. “Gamebred” believes his grudge rival shouldn’t have been let to get away with his cheap fighting tactics.
With all the hype and expectations built up for the ultimate grudge match between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington at UFC 272, “Gamebred” came out with a very disappointing performance. The fighter from American Top Team was dominated by his former friend in a five-round intense fight. Colby won the fight via unanimous decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Though Colby might have gotten the better of Masvidal, the former interim champion sure did have some cheap shots at his rival. Colby was caught poking the eye and also giving a low blow towards Jorge during the fight which Masvidal believes was not reprimanded by referee Herb Dean. Jorge explains his issue with the refereeing in the post-fight press conference of UFC 272.
“The eye poke was pretty bad, man. The only thing that is hurting me right now is the f**king eye poke. My eye is still throbbing right now,” said Masvidal talking to the press. “I’ve had a couple of mishaps with Herb Dean. I don’t why he fixed that action. He threw a punch, missed, and immediately went for the eyeball.”
“It is still throbbing right now,” Jorge Masvidal on Colby Covington’s eye poke
“I’m not gonna take away nothing from him winning the fight because it was just one sequence. But it would have been cool and I would have got my breather,” said Jorge. “He poked the shit out of my eye. It’s still throbbing right now. It is the only thing that is still hurting on me.”
“Me and Herb Dean don’t have a clean record as it is. You know, we have had a couple of mishaps in the past and he’s not my cup of tea when it comes to refereeing.” Referee Herb Dean warned Colby before the second round after watching the replay but Jorge Masvidal thinks it was too late.
“There was also a low blow as well. I don’t know. Colby has always been a dirty fighter but I’m not gonna rely on that,” said Masvidal in the presser. Masvidal now is on a three-fight consecutive losing streak and will look to bounce back with a win.
