“He’s trying to pick and choose,” Belal Muhammad blasts Colby Covington for taking easy fights on return to title shot
Colby Covington- Belal Muhammad
Seems like UFC welterweight Belal Muhammad is closely noticing every fighter’s career and that includes former 2-time welterweight title challenger Colby Covington. Muhammad is looking forward to avenging his loss in a rematch against fellow welterweight Vicente Luque at UFC on ESPN 34 this weekend. Muhammad got knocked out by Luque in the first fight. Both Luque and Muhammad are 10-1 in their last 11 fights with a no-contest in Muhammad’s record as well.
Muhammad is coming off the biggest win of his career when he outclassed the former two-time welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson and secured a unanimous decision victory. Since then, Muhammad has been open and confident to enter into an elevated competition altogether as he broke into #5 of the top welterweight rankings. Now, with Luque ahead, Muhammad has a task ahead to climb the rankings and get the title shot, and some business from the past as well to settle.
Belal Muhammad says Colby Covington is not fighting legitimate fighters with winning records right on their back
In the pre-fight media scrum, Muhammad talks about everything from Khamzat Chimaev’s performance at UFC 273 to his fight ahead this weekend at UFC on ESPN 34. In the midst of this, Muhammad gives his thought on Colby Covington as well, who last fought against fellow welterweight and friend turned rival Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272, where Covington swept over Masvidal with his wrestling and grabbed the unanimous decision victory, the same way Muhammad defeated Thompson in his last fight.
“Colby’s not fighting any tough fighters,” says Muhammad “He’s fighting Masvidal off 2 losses, he’s fighting Woodley off of 3 losses. He’s trying to pick and choose his way back to a title shot, calling out a ’55er in Dustin Poirier. Then trying to talk his way to another title shot. He hasn’t beaten no top 5, real, legitimate guys that are coming off wins,” concludes Muhammad.
What do you make of Muhammad’s assessment of Covington’s career? Do you think he is right? Perhaps, Muhammad will squash Covington’s criticism once Covington gets to fight #2 ranked welterweight Khamzat Chimaev, who’s coming off a win against Gilbert Burns and was assured a fight against Covington next as a reward for the victory by UFC President Dana White. Who do you think will win in Muhammad’s rematch against his opponent Vicente Luque?
