After successfully defending his heavyweight title for the first time, Francis Ngannou revealed that he was fighting to remind people of his ability.
The scenes of UFC 270 are still very fresh in the minds of MMA fans around the world. The first PPV of UFC of this year turned out to be an immense event. The headline bout between Ngannou and Ciryl Gane was a tremendous showdown of skills, technique, and fighting spirit of the fighters. Gane did put a good challenge in front of Champion and became the second fighter after Stipe Miocic to survive five rounds with the ‘ Predator’. But it wasn’t enough for the Frenchman to dethrone Ngannou from the championship position.
Ngannou just showed impressive calmness and proved why he is considered an elite-level fighter. After five rounds of amazing action, Ngannou finally won the fight via unanimous decision.
Francis Ngannou’s statement after his first title defense
After proving himself against his most dangerous opponent and coming out victorious, Ngannou shared his experience with BT Sport. During the interview, the heavyweight champion was asked how he was feeling after winning and defeating Gane.
The French-Cameroonian explained that this feeling is pretty good but he isn’t surprised by the result as he was confident about himself. The fighter expressed that he was fighting to proclaim his name and remind fans what they forgot. And he was successful in his intention and did a good job proving himself. “Not a surprise to me, I came here just to make a statement. I was that man before but people seem to forget. So, I came here to remind people and I think I did it,” said Ngannou.
It was a tough fight for Ngannou on paper as fans were assuming that Gane might be able to put the champion into a hard situation and win the title. But L had different intentions as he executed his game plan perfectly and didn’t give Gane any openings to capitalize. This fight sure was a special one for the fighters and their fans. The performance helped him to remind fans why is the best in the division and deserves to be the champion of the world.
