Dan Lambert on Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal rose to fame following his sensational flying knee over Ben Askren. Masvidal has been a household name ever since that win, and he became of the most popular guys in the entire MMA circuit. Masvidal is a true pioneer of the game, but his journey was full of ups and downs.

He started out fighting on the street, and literally had no money to sustain himself. He would often fight for petty cash, and everything changed when his mentor pulled him out from the streets and he started competing professionally. Masvidal’s MMA career was full of surprises, he was fighting top-ranked UFC contenders from the very start, but Masvidal was always getting the bitter end of split decisions.

He took some time out from the competition and came back with a changed mentality. He knocked out England’s darling, Darren Till upon his return, and everyone saw what he did against Askren. Masvidal even got a chance at the title, but he came up short on both occasions. He recently got involved in a grudge match against Colby Covington at the main event of UFC 272, and unfortunately for him, Covington dominated him for 5 rounds to get the unanimous decision victory.

Masvidal started his MMA journey, at American Top Team, and its owner Dan Lambert knew him from the very start. He always knew Masvidal was a special guy, but he thought he was wasting his time and talent at all the wrong places. He was stunned by the insane popularity he gained in the second half of his career, and he took some time to reflect upon it in his recent interview.

“Absolutely stunned,” Lambert said. “Flabbergasted. I grabbed him one time at the gym when he was just doing things the wrong way and I grabbed a couple of the young guys, I said, ‘If you want to screw up your career, do what Jorge does. If you want to waste all the talent in the world like this guy has, do what Jorge does.’ I guess I was wrong.”
