“I’ll let Marvin get a shot”- Sean Strickland sheds light on his relationship with Marvin Vettori

Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori

Sean Strickland is currently in a very weird position in the UFC middleweight division. After his win against Jack Hermansson at UFC Vegas 47, Strickland got his sixth consecutive win and now is calling out Israel Adesanya for a title shot.

If he fails to get the title shot there aren’t many options for the fighter as Marvin Vettori will have no interest in fighting the number sixth fighter in the division. The same goes with Derek Brunson, who is on a five-fight win streak and ranks higher than Strickland.

In the post-fight press conference of UFC Vegas 47, Strickland opened up about his friendship with Marvin Vettori. The fighter revealed that at UFC Vegas 41, when Paulo Costa failed to make weight for his fight against Vettori, UFC asked him to take his position on very short notice. The promotion was willing to pay Strickland a huge amount of money to fight Vettori back then.

Strickland explained that when he asked Marvin, he was okay with it as he understood the significance of the fight purse. According to Strickland, he said yes because the money was great. But, now if given an opportunity, he would happily let Vettori take his next title shot against Israel Adesanya before fighting him.

They(UFC) actually asked me whenever Costa drank too much wine and cookies. They offered me a lot of money to take his fight on a day’s notice and I called Marvin. I was like  Marvin, they’re offering me a lot of f***** money I have to say yes. And Marvin is a good friend he was like dude yes, I can’t blame you for saying yes. So in that situation, I said yes but if it’s just for what I’m making. If it’s just for I would rather bow my head and you know I’ll let Marvin get a title shot before I fight him,” said Strickland.

The confusion between the middleweights on who will get the title shot will most probably come to an end after Adesanya and Robert Whittaker fight for the title at UFC 271. It will be interesting to see how the UFC will give the fighters the opportunity they deserve.
