Israel Adesanya wants to keep his ego in check or it could ‘burn the whole sh*t down’

Israel Adesanya

Ahead of his fourth title defense next week at UFC 271, Israel Adesanya talks about his ego and how it helped him achieve greatness. Adesanya has always been big on confidence in himself and his skills as a fighter. He was undefeated in his professional MMA career until Jan Blachowicz defeated him at UFC 259. I

In the fight, Blachowicz showed the world how to dominate one of the most dynamic strikers in the sport by taking down his advantages. Blachowicz didn’t play a standing game with Izzy; instead, he went for takedowns and kept the fighters on the ground.

This is something Robert Whittaker can use in his fight against Israel Adesanya next week. Whittaker is already considered an established wrestler and if he manages to take Izzy into the deep waters, it might be over for the champ at UFC 271.

As the stage is set for the UFC middleweight super rematch between Izzy and Whittaker, UFC posted the countdown show of UFC 271 on their official YouTube channel. In the show, the champ discussed his opinions on his ego.

According to the fighter, he has a productive ego, which helps him to be more competitive and be better than everybody. But the problem is that if he feels the ego is in the wrong direction, it can create great problems for the fighter. Izzy explained that currently, his ego is driving him down the best path. It has helped him to totally dominate the division and all the fighters in it.

I have a healthy ego. I like to use it to my advantage like a fire, use it to make life. But then if I fan it the wrong way, it could burn the whole s**t down’. So that can go two ways, but right now the way it’s going it’s in my favor. Shows true dominance that he lapped the division at the top and did it again,” said Adesanya.

Izzy as a character, has always been outspoken and confident about his skills, both inside and outside the octagon. The fighter never backed down to convey his personality to the fans. This attitude of the fighter might seem like arrogance to many MMA fans but it’s not something rare in the UFC. The history of the organization is filled with fighters trading insults and talking big about their opponents. Because at the end of the day, it’s a competitive sport and business, and the champ will always want to remain at the top.
