“It was scary” – Francis Ngannou details gruesome injuries that almost pulled him out of UFC 270

Francis Ngannou

Francis Ngannou defeated Ciryl Gane in the main event of UFC 270 in a title unification bout. This was Ngannou’s first title defense and it came against an undefeated interim champion, whom he has trained with before.

Francis Ngannou gave shocking news to everyone that he was about to pull out of the fight due to knee injuries, he had prior to the fight. Ngannou was cleared to fight on Tuesday and had injuries in the camp. During his post-fight scrum with Laura Sanko, he said,

“That happened three weeks and half ago and it was this close like one inch to be canceled because when we did the MRI the report came out and it was scary, it wasn’t good. I remember Dr. Davison reading the report to me. It was scary and telling me how my MCL is torn, my MPFL is torn, my ACL is damaged and basically, the only thing that I have left on my leg was my PCR and my LCL. But we did a lot of jobs, lot of work at the PI.

They helped me a lot with the rehab, did stem cell, did everything that we can, and obviously rely on the muscles on my quadriceps and to support that everything, until Tuesday I went to see a doctor who can clear me and he wasn’t very positive about it but I’m like I’m doing this. Let’s do this, we’ve been through a lot.”

Ngannou was wearing a knee cap during the fight which was allowed by the CSAC.

This fight is stated by many as the greatest technical fight in the history of the UFC HW division but even after everything Ngannou went through to win this fight, he still ranks his victory over Stipe Miocic in the second fight higher than any other win. Ngannou’s reason for that was avenging his first loss to Miocic.

This fight is also very special for him as he puts behind the rivalry with his coach to rest it was his last fight on his UFC contract and he wanted to leave with the victory on Saturday in order to have some leverage during contract negotiation. Also, Ngannou overcame injuries, and all these things made the fight special to him.

Ngannou said, “It feels pretty good and so far I think, I don’t know between this one and the Stipe because the Stipe one was also great. I have a personal matter with that like my revenge but I think with everything being going around with this one, this one feel very good very relaxing. I feel relieved at this moment.

I came here tonight just to make a statement, regardless and was trying to focus on the fight and ignore everything that was around because it’s been very tough mentally and even physically with injury and stuff. I trust myself and I knew that I’ve been through a lot and by this time there’s not something that I can’t overcome.”
