Joe Rogan sheds light on the size difference between fighters in Jiu-jitsu fights. Rogan is an encyclopedia of combat sports and has been following them for years now. According to the UFC color commentator, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is the only type of discipline where a small fighter can take on a big opponent.
To prove his point, Rogan mentioned that if Michael Chandler and Francis Ngannou participate in a slug fest, Ngannou will destroy the smaller fighter. However, in a jiu-jitsu battle, an expert such as Charles Oliveira can submit Ngannou.
He said: “With jiu-jitsu is the one Martial art where the big guy can get dominant the little guy. Because any other world, like a guy like Michael Chandler has zero chance against the guy of size of Francis Ngannou. If they are gonna just throw hands,he has zero chance. I’m putting all my chips on the big guy. But in Jiu-jitsu if you get a guy like Charles Oliveira, who’s that good at jiu-jitsu he could strangle a f****** heavyweight.”
BJJ is a fighting style where fighters rely on grappling, ground control and submission holds rather than punching and kicking. BJJ doesn’t necessarily rely on power but on the skill set of fighters. That might be the reason why Rogan believes Olivera can beat heavyweights in BJJ fights.
Joe Rogan puts jiu-jitsu as the purest form of Martial arts

In a podcast conversation with Lex Fridman, Joe Rogan shared his thoughts on the intricacies of Jiu Jitsu, emphasizing his belief that luck plays no role in this martial art. He confidently stated, “Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, judo, and wrestling—those are absolutes in terms of controlling the body and exerting influence once you establish a physical hold. There’s no lucky triangle choke in Jiu Jitsu.”
Reflecting on his personal experience, Rogan admitted that his journey in Jiu Jitsu was a humbling one. Recounting a specific instance, he recalled encountering an opponent who was similar in size and age. Rogan, having prior experience in kickboxing, initially harbored the belief that he could overcome his adversaries. However, much to his surprise, this individual of comparable stature thoroughly dominated him in a Jiu Jitsu match, leaving Rogan astounded by the effectiveness of the discipline.
Rogan’s candid admission shed light on the realization that Jiu Jitsu demanded a different level of skill and strategy, one that surpassed his previous martial arts experience. This encounter served as a powerful reminder of the humbling nature of Jiu Jitsu, where physical attributes alone do not guarantee victory, but rather, the mastery of technique and control takes precedence.
