Justin Gaethje compares Charles Oliveira’s mindset to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s ahead of title fights, reveals why it can cost the Brazilian
Charles Oliveira Khabib Nurmagomedov Justin Gaethje
Justin Gaethje believes Khabib Nurmagomedov was on a different level at UFC 254 and Charles Oliveira might be able to produce that too. Gaethje is all set to take on Oliveira for the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 274 on May 7, 2022. The Pay-per-view event has gathered immense attention from the fight fans and everyone is excited about the fight card.
It is the second time Gaethje will fight for the lightweight title after losing once against former champion, Nurmagomedov. In that last fight, Gaethje was being considered to be the fighter who would break the undefeated streak of ‘ The Eagle’. But unfortunately, Gaethje lost the fight via submission in the second round.
Justin Gaethje compares Charles Oliveira with Khabib Nurmagomedov
Ahead of his mega-fight with Oliveira this weekend, Justin Gaethje joined Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports for a virtual interview.
In the interview, the fighter discussed his upcoming fight, his preparations and what is different this time than his first title shot. During the conversation, Gaethje gave his clear opinion regarding the difference and similarities between Oliveira and Nurmagomedov.
Gaethje revealed that at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi against Nurmagomedov things were extremely different. According to Gaethje, for a fighter, his reason to fight matters the most and for Nurmagomedov that day it was massive. ‘The Highlight’ explained that for Nurmagomedov his father’s death and him knowing that it was his last fight fueled his performance to another level. Gaethje also claimed that maybe Oliveira is at that same level but his overconfidence that he can’t be defeated can cost him the fight.
“You know your ‘why’ is everything and Khabib ‘why’ that night with the passing of his father with him having the knowledge that it was gonna be his last fight. You know, larger than life, was his ‘why’. And maybe Charles is there but from what he’s saying he thinks he’s infallible and those are the best people to fight,” said Gaethje.
Gaethje has been very respectful towards the Brazilian throughout this whole build-up and has given him credit for his performances. But at the same time, Gaethje knows his capabilities and is confident that he can win. It will be interesting to see these two when they come face to face during the pre-fight press conference.
