Justin Gaethje claims he wants to fight Max Holloway, but doesn’t see it happening anytime soon
Justin Gaethje vs Max Holloway
Justin Gaethje hasn’t competed since losing the title fight to Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2020. The number two ranked lightweight is booked to face Michael Chandler but there was someone else he wanted to face.
Justin Gaethje recently appeared in an interview with Brett Okamoto from ESPN, where he talked about many things, he expressed his feelings over the fact that UFC presented Michael Chandler with a title shot with Charles Oliveira instead of Dustin Poirier and him.
Now that he has an opportunity to put himself back in the title mix, he expressed his desire to fight another great opponent. He said, “Max is probably my favorite fighter to watch so I honestly don’t want to fight the guy ever. But I need to put myself in the title picture and if he jumps weight classes, I wasn’t sure if with Brian Ortega vs. Volkanovski being tied up with The Ultimate Fighter, I thought maybe he might want to come up to lightweight and try his hand, with Khabib being gone, at the lightweight title. That was an option at the time but didn’t work out.”
Justin Gaethje claims the title match between Oliveira and Chandler turned the lightweight belt into a laughing stock
Justin believes the title match between Chandler and Oliveira wasn’t justified, and he almost went too hard to describe their fight, he said, He said, “I think this was the most coveted title in the UFC when Khabib was around. It was turned into almost the laughing stock of the UFC overnight”
He added, “When you had Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler fighting for the title, to be honest, when those two weren’t the best guys fighting for the belt. It was me and Poirier, is who should have been fighting for the belt. Number one, number two. That’s what should’ve happened.”
