Kamaru Usman gives his thoughts on the blockbuster fight between Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev. The welterweight champion believes his former teammate could’ve done better to win the fight.
Gilbert Burns showed that he was a true warrior at UFC 273. The #2 ranked welterweight agreed to take the risk of fighting a rising superstar and a young prospect in Khamzat Chimaev to give the fans what they want. Burns felt disrespected heading into the fight as a massive underdog but in the end, proved to the world he is still an elite fighter.

Kamaru Usman, who is currently eyeing fresh blood in the welterweight division paid close attention to the people’s main event at UFC 273. In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Usman commented on the fight and talked about the disrespect towards Burns and how the Brazilian could’ve done better. “It was a very very good fight. I think both guys came prepared and the fight showed that,” said Usman talking to a TMZ reporter.
“I think a lot of people were disrespecting Gilbert Burns. I mean, this kid [Khamzat Chimaev] you get a kid like this, that comes in with a lot of hype, a lot of people are talking about him…he was the most talked-about thing on the card. To where it was very disrespectful to a guy like Gilbert Burns who has put in the years, fought all these guys, to get here and you are disrespecting them.”
“Minor tweaks,” Kamaru Usman comments on Gilbert Burns’ fight plan against Khamzat Chimaev

“I think to be honest with you, I think just minor tweaks from Gilbert Burns and that fight was very very winnable,” said Kamaru in the interview. Usman believes the judges scored the card rightly and the fight was a very close one. Khamzat won the fight unanimously after his dominant performances in round 1 and round 3.
Heading into the fight, Khamzat had absorbed only one significant strike in his first four UFC fights. Gilbert surely welcomed Khamzat in style to the top of the division as he landed more than 100 significant strikes in a single, three-round fight against Chimaev. Kamaru also reveals that he saw holes in Khamzat’s game.
