Chimaev was born on May 1, 1994, in Chechnya, Russia as Khamzat Girikhanov, a name he used highly during his days in school wrestling. Chimaev started off training in mixed-martial arts in late 2015 after watching UFC 194 main-event fight between UFC megastar Conor McGregor and then featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who was dethroned by McGregor via knockout in just 14 seconds.
Chimaev made his MMA debut in 2017 as an amateur with a record of 3-0. He made his professional debut in 2018 and went 6-0 before coming into and making waves in the UFC. Chimaev fought and won his first two fights, finishing them both within a span of just 10 days. His third fight was a competition escalation, putting him against the very tough longtime UFC fighter Gerald Meerschaert. Chimaev knocked Meerschaert out in 17 seconds of the first round.
A halt came to Chimaev’s career when he had Covid, weakness entered into Chimaev’s body to such an extent that he was once considering quitting the sport forever. However, after recovering from the disease that brought the 2020-21 pandemic, Chimaev returned against then #11 ranked welterweight Li Jingliang. Chimaev picked Jingliang up, took him to the cage side, started talking to UFC President Dana White and dropped Jingliang into submission in the very first round.
