“Like Khabib and Tony”- Islam Makhachev comments on the prospect of fight against Charles Oliveira, likens it to a fan favourite clash that never materialized
Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira
Islam Makhachev seemed excited about the prospect of fighting Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt during a recent interview. Islam who just beat Bobby Green, extended his win streak to 10, strengthening his case for a championship bout.
Islam is looking forward to UFC 274 headlined by Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje for the lightweight belt. Of course, Islam plans on finishing his next opponent and fighting the winner of Oliveira vs Gaethje in order to secure the belt like Khabib, his longtime training partner and current coach.
In order for Islam to get that opportunity he will have to face the toughest opponent he has had to date, Beniel Dariush.
“We’re going to remake the Dariush fight. We’ll get that fight going. Dying to see that fight. He gets through Dariush, very interesting.”– Dana White
Beniel is currently ranked number 4 at lightweight and a win over Beniel will get Islam the title shot he wants. Islam would like if Oliveira won at UFC 274 as, in his opinion, Islam vs Oliveira is comparable to Khabib vs Tony, a fight which was scheduled numerous times but never came to pass.
“If Oliveira beat Gaethje 11 win streak vs 10 win streak, this is like same way like Khabib and Tony, this is biggest fight in lightweight division”– Islam Mahkachev

Is Charles Oliveira a potential threat to Islam Makhachev?
Charles Oliveira has proved to the world how he is a champion, after his showdown with Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 held in December 2021. Most people put their money on Dustin emerging victorious including Khabib Nurmagomedo. However he lost to Charles via submission causing a major uproar around the world.
Khabib in a recent interview with ESPN genuinely tells how he thinks Charles Oliveira could stand in the way of Islam Makhachev’s title contention. He says, “Right now is Charles Oliveira time. He impressed me, and I really believe he is one of the best fighters in the world right now and the best lightweight in the world. It’s going to be very interesting fight if next fight Islam wins and Charles wins, and they’re going to fight end of the next year. It’s going to be a great fight.“ In Fact Khabib is rooting for an Oliveira vs Makhachev happening by this year and thinks it could be a very close call.
