“A little more technical,” head coach compares Khamzat Chimaev’s UFC 273 battle with Alexander Gustafsson-Jon Jones title fight

UFC Welterweight Khamzat Chimaev definitely upset his coach- Andreas Michael from All-Stars Training Center, Sweden– for his dangerous approach to go in a blown-out fistfight in his last fight, but Chimaev was not the first pupil to put Michael in such a situation. Chimaev last fought at UFC 273 against formerly #2 ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns, securing a unanimous decision victory in a fight to be remembered for ages. While the fans enjoyed the back and forth, for coach Michael, securing the win with patience and safety was his priority.

But it was a deja vu for coach Michael, as back in 2013, Michael was also coaching and cornering former 2-time light-heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson for his first title fight against the then-champion Jon Jones, in a fight which got inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame class of 2021. Gustafsson became the first legitimate challenge to Jones’ reign as the light-heavyweight champion, to such an extent that it was thought in the first half of the fight that we had the new champion until Jones turned the tide in his favour in later rounds.

In an interview with ESPN MMA correspondent Brett Okamoto, coach Michael talks about his frustration in coaching Chimaev during UFC 273 battle, Chimaev’s future as a fighter, and much more. In the beginning, Michael stumbled upon the last time he was equally mad and shouting at his fighter just like he did at Chimaev before UFC 273, and it was way back in 2013, in an aforementioned title fight between Chimaev’s teammate Gustafsson and Jones. Michael tells the key difference between both the legendary fights.

“The fight with Alex [Gustafsson] and Jones was a little more technical,” says Michael “It was a brawl… [but] it was more technical. This [fight between Chimaev and Burns] was an all-out brawl, which we were training not to have… I was working on the technique, I was working on the jab [of Chimaev], something that could have been so simple, turned out to be like… [a long night as Michael concludes later on.]”

What do you make of coach Andreas Michael’s assessment on comparing both the aforementioned fights of his pupils Alexander Gustafsson and Khamzat Chimaev from All-Stars Training Center in Sweden? Who do you think should Chimaev face next? As far as UFC’s matchmaking is concerned, they are interested in getting Chimaev against Colby Covington. For Gustafsson, he is planning on making his heavyweight debut on May 2022’s fight card.
