UFC Mexico City will not feature Yair Rodriguez and Diego Lopes as headliners. Former two-time UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno is back in his element again. He now takes on recent UFC flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg on Saturday, March 29, 2025, in the main event of UFC Mexico City.
The card goes down inside Arena CDMX in Mexico. SBNation Network was able to confirm the booking with multiple sources. With UFC Vegas 104 in the pipeline, the UFC brass is yet to confirm this one. Brandon Moreno recently broke Amir Albazi’s six-fight winning streak in UFC Edmonton.
Coach Sayif Saud said the Mexican sensation has what it takes to challenge the flyweight crown for the undisputed gold now. Moreno (22-8-2 MMA, 10-5-2 UFC) has lost to Alexandre Pantoja thrice, most recently in their title fight at UFC 290. But “Assassin Baby” knows he has work left and also needs another win to get properly back into title talks. Hence, he draws ‘Astroboy’ Steve Erceg for it.

Per Sources: Brandon Moreno vs Steve Erceg is IN THE WORKS for UFC Mexico City March 29th pic.twitter.com/Pr0gLY7taB
Aussie man Erceg is fresh from gritty warfare with Pantoja at the UFC 301 PPV event headliner. However, after that, Kai Kara France swiped out his chances last August with a first-round KO loss. This is why Erceg getting a chance in a top-tier battle which is easily a top contender placement has fans in a weird place. They have accordingly reacted as much.
Fight fans react to Steve Erceg matching Brandon Moreno
“The Assassin Baby” told UFC Edmonton post-fight media scrum that he needs to win to get back in title contention. Hence, a win in March could put him over the top. Enter Team Wilkes Martial Arts’ Steve Erceg.
Erceg (12-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) was rumored to face rising Kazakh Asu Almabayev at UFC APEX. He burst into the global title contention spotlight with consecutive wins over David Dvorak, Alessandro Costa, and Matt Schnell. The walk-off KO and style statement over Schnell from comically uninterested-looking Erceg in early 2024 was a clear top contender.
Red-hot Erceg went 3-0 at the start, which aligned him with a title crack. However, he has gone into a slump since then. Now, many are surprised that Steve Erceg faces veteran Brandon Moreno at UFC Mexico City. Subsequently, here are the top reactions to it:
So erceg gets knocked out clean and gets a higher ranked opponent?

Not as good as the Lopes vs Yair fight, but it should still be a great one. It makes you wonder what the UFC has planned next for Lopes, though.

You know Moreno takes it

🚨 this will be a banger! I got Moreno tho

Why is Erceg booked up the rankings again on a two fight skid? This is setting him up for failure.

That's my boy Steve "Carrel" Erceg
— Gibbo (@gibbo_co) January 29, 2025
Erceg via whatever he wants.

The latest discourse ended a two-fight skid for Moreno, a pair of painful split decisions. But does Erceg deserve to work up the rankings after two losses though? Sure he does. One fan noted, “So Erceg gets knocked out clean and gets a higher ranked opponent?“
But then Erceg was an unlikely underdog in his title bout as well. Recent late-minute replacements (Renato Moicano at #11) or even timely legacy title challengers (Khalil Rountree and Stipe Miocic at #8) were unlikely too. But all of them stood their ground; as once did Erceg. As such, he cannot be completely counted out against the Mexican star.
